Changing the ringtone is one of the first things you would do on a new mobile phone. If you wish to stand out in a crowd, you should make your own ringtones, but setting an MP3 file as a phone's default ringtone is what an amateur would do. With AVS Ringtone Maker, you can cut and adjust your audio files, to make them sound like actual ringtones, instead of a simple song, which you want to hear when you receive a phone call.

AVS Ringtone Maker is free to try for evaluation purposes. The trial version doesn't have any functionality restrictions, but it will place a voice logo on your output files. Installing the software should not take more than a minute, even on older machines. It works on Windows XP, Vista, Win 7 and Win 8 and it doesn't ask for any additional tools.

The user interface has an efficient layout and its controls should not present a challenge even for inexperienced users. It includes an explorer-like navigation pane, on its left side, which makes it quite easy to import audio files. All you have to do is browse through your local folders and drag an audio file to the editing area, in the larger area on the right. The software provides support for all popular audio formats, including MP3, WAV, AAC, OGG and others. Additionally, you can record your voice with a microphone and import the recording automatically.

Imported audio files are displayed as two wave forms, for the left and right channels. You can play a loaded track from beginning to end or play a selection, which you can make by clicking and dragging directly on the wave form. Besides playing a selection, you can also click a series of options, located on a toolbar, to trim it and to apply various effects. The software allows you to amplify and normalize a selected segment of the audio track, apply fade and reverb effects, reverse the selection and much more.

Once you apply an effect, a new window will show up on the screen, on which you can make various fine adjustments. All effects can be tuned by dragging one or more sliders or by clicking a few check boxes. When your work is complete, you can export your new ringtone in MP3, WAV or other formats, with different sample and bit rates. Furthermore, the software can send the ringtone directly to a mobile phone, if it's connected to your computer.
